TOURNEY IV RECAP

TOURNEY IV CHAMPS - UKRAINE - (L-R) Amanda Waquan, Alissa Liska, Meighan Kerr, Coralee Forbes (G), Anna Hackman, Elizabeth Gaumont, Shawn Davison (GM), Erin Kaminski

THE UKRAINE TRAIN

It's been a steady climb for the only GM that team Ukraine has ever known

Back in the spring of '22, with GM Shawna Davison at the helm, Ukraine chugged slowly out of the gates. After winning the first WOSHL game in history (3-1 vs Ireland), the Ukraines would drop their remaining two round robin games, and fail to qualify for the playoffs.

Tourney II would see them start to pick up a little speed. They would open the tournament with a loss, but sandwich in an 8-3 win over Team Scotland. Despite a round robin ending 6-2 loss to Demark, they were still able to slide into the playoffs...where they eventually fell 9-5 to Team Finland.

The momentum would continue to build in Tourney III. This time, after dropping the tournament opener, the Ukraines would finish the round robin with two straight victories to head back to the post season. They would follow a strong round-robin with the franchises first-ever playoff win (5-3 over Germany), before bowing out in a crushing 7-1 loss at the hands of Colleen Mantie and Team Czechia.

But in Tourney IV...it would finally be full-steam-ahead!

To open the tournament, Davison and Team Ukraine found themselves in a full out brawl with the team that ended the Ukraine run the previous year. Led by Colleen Mantie and the eventual back-to-back tournament MVP, Steph Fedoruk, the Czech's were a high-powered offense. Fedoruk netted 5 goals in the contest, but it was Anna Hackman's hat-trick goal, and fifth point of the game, that would give Ukraine the opening game victory.

Ukraine, carried by Hackman (14 pts) and Meighan Kerr (11 pts), as well as the strong goaltending of Coralee Forbes, would finish out the round robin with a perfect 3-0 record. Thier wins of 8-2 and 8-3 over Denmark and the Swedes respectively, left no doubt that this team would be difficult to knock off track.

The opening round of the playoffs would see the Ukraines square off with team Latvia. The Latvians were led by an extremely balanced attack that produced the second-most goals in the round-robin.  Anna Hackman's first-half hat-trick paced Ukraine to a 5-2 lead.  Latvia managed to score one more in the second half, but that's all the scoring that would take place, and Ukraine powered on to Round 2 with a 5-3 win.

In order to reach their final destination, the Paris Jewellers Cup Final, Team Ukraine would once again have to travel through Czechia. Tournament MVP, Steph Fedoruk, had amassed 24 points through the first four games, including an impressive 4 goal, 7 point performance in Czechia's opening playoff game vs the USA.

It would be a back-and-forth affair, with neither team being able to gain a two-goal advantage at any point in the contest. Ukraine led three different times, including with time ticking down in the second half. But, Fedoruk wouldn't let the Czech's go quietly, tying the game up with her hat-trick goal.

Coralle Forbes stood tall the rest of the way, stopping Fedoruk on a penalty shot with less than 20 seconds remaining in regulation, as well as numerous point-blank saves throughout the overtime frame.

It would be Ukraine's Amanda Waquan that would finally end the marathon, scoring just before time would've expired on the 10-miniute overtime frame, sending the Ukraine's to their first-ever championship game.

The Fins would be the final hill to climb before Ukraine could reach their final destination.  Both teams looked understandably exhausted after having just played 5-games, with the last one having wrapped up less than 30-minutes prior (15 for Ukraine) to the drop of the Championship ball.

Anna Hackman opened the scoring for Ukraine. Finland's Jill Maier responded. Anna Hackman netted another one before the first half would conclude. 2-1 Ukraine at the half.

Maya Kryzen's 10th goal of the tournament would even the score up. From there, Vezina Trophy winner, Coralee Forbes would stand on her head, making countless big-time saves before, for the second straight game, Amanda Waquan, winner of the tournaments Heart & Hustle Award, would bury the game-winner.

Congratulations to Shawna Davison and Team Ukraine on a fantastic tournament. A well-deserved Championship!
